Below are a few helpful tips to think about when it comes to your vehicle this winter. Contact me if you have any further questions about how to keep yourself safe this winter season.
Check Your Fluid Levels
Working windshield wipers and a solid supply of wiper fluid will ensure that you maintain visibility in the worst of snowstorms. Wiper fluid can get used up quickly during heavy snow, for obvious reasons. It is also important that you choose a wiper fluid with a low freezing point, when possible.
Windshield wiper blades typically only last a year. If you are thinking it's time for a replacement, it probably is.
Check and refill your engine coolant. Engine coolant performs the essential task of keeping your vehicle from overheating in the summer and freezing in the winter. It's a good rule of thumb to monitor your coolant levels to make sure you have the right fluid amounts. When it needs to be replenished, make sure you use the right type of coolant and fill it to the proper level.
Lastly, keeping the gas tank full is even more important during the winter months. A full tank may prevent accumulated water in your fuel pump from freezing. It can also help you stay warm, as you can continue to run the engine if you get stuck on the road.
Have Your Battery Checked
There is nothing fun about getting into your car in freezing temperatures and it not starting due to a dead battery. All car batteries should typically be replaced every five to seven years. If there is a build-up on the posts of the battery, chances are that your car battery needs to be replaced. The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment. However, most motorists can perform routine care. If battery caps are removable, check your fluid level monthly. A word of caution: Removal of cables can cause damage or loss of data/codes on some newer vehicles, so always check your owner’s manual first.
Are Your Brakes Safe?
If your brakes are worn, you will have a hard time stopping at the most critical times. Sometimes its as simple as replacing the brake pads for winter. If you aren't sure or have been hearing noises when braking - its important to have them inspected.
Before You Drive
Don't let the frustration of a frozen door handle lead to a broken door handle. Do not keep pulling on a door handle if it is frozen and wont open. It is very easy to break a handle or the interior mechanism attached to the handle off during cold weather. Use cold water, not hot water to thaw the ice surrounding the handle and gently attempt opening the vehicle again.
With the cold temperatures its also very important you allow extra time for your engine to warm up before you begin driving.
Thank you - Stay warm and stay safe on the roads.
